Cultural Tips & Etiquette
Last order is sacred
In most izakayas, last order is 30–40 mins before closing. If you hear 'おしまいですよ', it's time to order your final round and the bill.
The 'shime' ritual
Saying 'これで締め' signals to everyone (and the staff) that you're wrapping up. It's considered thoughtful and very local.
Highball > Beer after 10pm
After a certain hour, ordering a highball instead of another beer makes you look like you know what you're doing.
Don't be the last one to pay
In groups, someone will eventually say 'お会計'. It's polite to have your cash/card ready and offer to split quickly.
Ramen after drinking is a religion
Ichiran or a local chain at 1am is basically a Tokyo rite of passage. Learn the ticket machine phrases in the quick cards.
